Welcome

Hello and welcome to my website.

I am an integrative relational psychotherapist and I use my experience of talking and relating to you in sessions to understand your way of being in the world, how you make sense of it and how you relate to others. Together, we might explore ways to notice or address what is in the way of your aims, happiness, goals or fulfillment.

Practice

I work with adults weekly (usually for an initial six sessions) who struggle with or feel overwhelmed by aspects of your life. This might include a relationship, work, emotions or personal difficulties. Within a strong, supporting alliance, you can reach attainable goals.

Your journey is unique. Every time I've been listened to and understood I've come away feeling cared for and valued with a new sense of worth. I've learned that change is inevitable and that how I care for myself in the present affects my future.

Psychotherapy with me involves a journey of exploration, an examination of the components or bits of your life that you struggle with and a search for new ways to view yourself, or others, or your environment to attain a balance and life harmony.

I work in York on Tuesdays and Thursdays and in Scarborough on Mondays in comfortable, well ventilated rooms.

Relationships

Our relationships form vital and important sources of nourishment for us, enabling us to rest, recreate and work in safety and trust.

Our earliest caregiving experiences form the pattern of our later styles of interacting with ourselves, the world, and others. We can pick up what our caregivers struggled with and view ourselves through the lenses they used.

A therapeutic relationship can model new ways to interact with yourself, others, and your environment that contributes to your wellbeing, nourishment and healthy society.

Neglect

If our caregivers gave us good enough interaction, affirmation and care as a child we can suceed in life as adults. Inadequate interactions, care or affirmation by caregivers as children can lead to a perceived lack in self confidence, low self esteem and poor adult relationships. Those early lessons can be rewritten by the experience of new sucessful interactions.

Mood regulation

On our journeys through childhood we rely on our caregivers to teach us to regulate our moods, after the pattern they've learnt from their caregivers.

Of the range of possible human emotions, our caregivers may have handled some of our emotions better than others.

In psychotherapy we can learn new ways to relate to, understand and value our emotions.

Trauma

Some people struggle with past events which seem forever to remain in the present. That's because of how our brains process trauma. Bringing those events into present experience and engagement in supportive and compassionate company enables our conscious brains to process them in the normal way and put them to rest in the past where they belong, and learn additional skills that enable us to cope with triggers in novel ways.

Anxiety

Anxiety seems to be a pandemic of our age and is an important indicator that something about us requires our attention. While you explore its origins I wonder what you have in your toolkit that helps you manage or befriend it? For some people listening to a favourite tune or artist works to break an anxiety cycle. For others it might involve a phone call to a loved one or exercise. ‎I like breathing space somewhere green and a combination of the above. For others a regular religious or spiritual practice helps. Good friendships and knowing you're accepted, respected and loved all work to build a strong inner peace structure.

Abuse

Abuse can take many forms. The recipient of the abuse is never responsible for the abuse they receive. Responsibility for the abuse resides soley with the perpetrator.

You can download an intake form below and the statement of understanding outlines the terms of my contract.

I use the CORE - Outcome Measures self assessment forms periodically through my clients' journeys if they are willing as a way to monitor the effect and direction of my clients' psychotherapy. You can download these below too.

You can contact me by text, phone or email to arrange an appointment.

Please leave me a message describing what you're looking for if I am unable to answer your call; I will return your call when it is convenient and aim to respond to all calls within 48 hours.

Experience

I have worked with individuals with a wide range of experiences which included relationship difficulties, post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, low self esteem, bereavement, end of life, suicidal thoughts, anger, obsessive behaviour, alcoholism, drug use, domestic violence, sexual violence, depression, childhood sexual abuse and/or panic attacks.

I welcome and have worked with adults who experience psychosis and Dissociative Identity Disorder.

I regularly take part in continual professional development training in areas of work that arise among clients presenting in my practice.
